Microsoft’s new version of Home Windows 11 will only undergo significant feature changes once a year, according to a post on the company’s help Web page. “Microsoft will aim to announce one Home Windows 11 feature change per year and roll it out in the second half of each calendar year,” the report said. “High-quality updates,” including monthly updates that convey new bugs and security fixes, will be offered throughout the year. Feature updates are those that alter the buyer’s personal know-how or add massive new options that will impact the platform’s future development.
In 2015, as Microsoft was getting ready to launch the Home windows 10 working system, a developer evangelist made a striking statement at a technical conference to mark the occasion.” He said, “Home windows 10 is the latest model of home windows. However, last week, Microsoft announced online “the next generation of home windows.”
Six years after that remark, the publicly traded company with the second-largest share price in the world is well advised to change course. Microsoft has diversified its business over the past three years, but there is no doubt that home services are the company’s logo and source of funding. The company’s logo is still on the window.
The reason behind why Microsoft opted
Here are nine reasons why Microsoft opted for a full-fledged replacement that could be called Windows 11, rather than the semi-annual Windows 10 updates.
● It’s good for business: According to the company, offering new variants of a huge product like Windows has led to higher prices in the past to improve Microsoft’s bottom line. Part of the reason for this is that manufacturers pre-install Microsoft software on people when they buy PCs with the software installed. Traditionally, Home Windows has operated at a higher profit margin than Microsoft as a whole, and continued growth in Home Windows will increase the value of the company.
● Intense competition: Coronavirus has benefited PC makers and Microsoft as people buy computer systems for work and home. Gartner, a business analyst, predicts that PC shipments will grow faster in 2020 than in the past decade. This will increase the growth rate of home service license revenue tied to customers’ PCs. As a result, Microsoft may launch a Home Windows update to entice people to buy new machines to measure the results of the laptop squeeze that won’t make traders bearish in response to the pandemic.
● Google’s threat: Google’s Chrome OS poses an unprecedented threat as people flock to low-cost Chromebook laptops that use Google’s operating system instead of Apple’s traditional Windows or macOS.
According to Gartner, laptop manufacturers shipped 11.7 million Chromebooks in 2020, and while that number is still small compared to the 79.4 million PCs shipped, Chromebooks have grown 200 percent, compared to about 11 percent for PCs. The problem Microsoft faces is that people are coming back.
This could mean that Home Depot 11 will have a longer shelf life than Home Depot 10. On this platform, Home Depot 10 went through a two-year feature replacement cycle. Having only one major feature change means that Microsoft doesn’t have many new features to add to the platform soon, and therefore should delay the release of new models.
Future of Ambient Computing
Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Apple are also preparing for the future of ambient computing. So the delay in updating the platform is not very surprising. Ambient computing is about embedding computing systems into the surfaces and devices around us, with voice and gestures replacing contacts, keyboards, mice, and touchpads as the primary input methods. Fb and other companies have been demonstrating prototype methods that they believe will emerge when augmented reality (AR) and digital reality (DR) products are in full swing.
For example, in March, Fb demonstrated an AR wrist controller, which learns gestures directly from signals sent by our brains via neurons and transmits those signals to surrounding computer systems. Assuming Microsoft keeps Windows 11 on the market for at least 5 years, these devices could start to become mainstream as soon as the next platform model is launched.
